History:
Emerald has long been sought after as jewellery. The earliest record of it being mined is from 1300BC by the Egyptians. It was often worn as an amulet and was thought that it would protect the wearer against magic spells. It was also seen as an antidote to poison.
In Ancient Rome Emerald was seen as a stone for Fertility and was closely associated with Venus. It was also closely linked to Mercury, the Messenger of the Gods and it was believed that to would bring Divine Inspiration.
Christian legend links it to the Resurrection, the New Dawn, and was often associated with the rising sun. It has also long been associated with the Legend of the Holy Grail.
In the Middle Ages it was believed that Emerald could combat all illnesses and strengthens man’s resolve. It was seen as a perfect stone to enhance one’s relationship and ensure fidelity.
In the Hindu culture Emerald is called Panna and is closely associated with the planet Mercury.
The largest Emerald ever found is known as the Bahia Emerald. It was found in a mine in Bahia, Brazil and weighs over 381 kgs. It is many Emerald crystals embedded in a host rock. This stone has built up quite a history of misfortunes and is considered to be cursed by some, yet, many people argue over the legal ownership of it.
Emerald gets it name from the Greek word ‘smaragdos’ which means ‘green stone’. It is usually associated with the month of May and the day Wednesday. The American state of North Carolina has claimed it as their state crystal, while many believe that this crystal supports the countries Peru and Spain.
As a birthstone, in Roman and Hebrew cultures it was linked to the month of June, where in the Arabic and Hindu cultures it is the birthstone for May. In modern times it is considered the birthstone for May.
Characteristics:
Emerald is a Silicate belonging to the Beryl family. Its colour ranges from light to dark green and is derived from chromium traces in the beryl. Emerald is considered a rare stone and is highly prized as a gemstone. Its hardness is between 7-8 on the Moh’s scale, which makes it perfect for jewellery making. It forms a perfect pencil like structure known as a prismatic crystal, which is the most common of all crystal structures. The best gem quality comes from Colombia, but it is also found in Brazil, Russia and Africa, India and Austria.
Because of it’s high value one can now find Emeralds that are laboratory grown which is in effect white beryl with a thin overgrowth of Emerald.
Function:
Emerald is a very hard working crystal. It’s main aim is to bring us back into our natural state of bliss, by releasing old feelings of victimization, wrong doing or hurt. It protects one through this process of release. It helps one to overcome disappointment and is a source of inspiration and patience.

The Best Way to Clean Emerald:
The element for Emerald is water, so a quick rinse under cold running water holding the intention to clean your crystal is sufficient. The most important point here is to hold a very clear and definite intention to clean your crystal. I often will run it a few time through the smoke of a frankincense incense stick to ensure that my crystal is 100% clean.
Charging:
Emerald’s source of power is the Green Ray. When charging your cleansed crystal, hold it in your hands. Close your eyes and imagine a green light flow from above your head into the top of your head, through your heart and into the crystal. Hold this light until you feel the crystal pulse in your hand, if you wish to strengthen your own energy field let this green light then flow out of your heart into the immediate space around you. Let it form an egg shape around you before sending the light into the earth as well.
How to wear Emerald:
The best way to work with Emerald is to wear it in jewellery form. Wear it as a ring on your right hand or as a pendant over your heart chakra.
If you are fortunate enough to have inherited a piece of Emerald jewellery, wearing it will pass on the wisdom of your ancestors to you. Just make sure that it is thoroughly cleansed as it can also pass on hurts from the past if not cleansed.
